The actress on filming in Sri Lanka and Rio de Janeiro, and yearning to visit the poles or go hiking up mountains

My husband and I love travelling

… and especially like exploring new places. We take it in turns to organise this so it is a surprise for one of us – the rule is that it has to be a place or a country that neither of us has ever been to before. Last year, we went to Romania, which was incredibly interesting.

For the past three years

I have been going to Galle in Sri Lanka from July to November to film The Good Karma Hospital. Sri Lanka is a beautiful country. The scenery is spectacular, the food is wonderful and the people are welcoming. I would really urge people to go and visit the island because the tourism industry took a setback after the bombing in Colombo last year.

I did a film in Rio de Janeiro

… and I will never forget the scenery; it was extraordinary. It is quite mind-boggling to go on top of Sugarloaf Mountain and look back inland – it just looks like a lunar landscape.

I am less a beach girl

… but more a pool girl. My husband loves swimming in the sea but he is a diver and he likes that sort of thing. By the time we go for our big holiday we are exhausted, so we just want to rest.

My earliest memory of travelling abroad was to South Africa when I was about 10, in the late Sixties

We lived in Johannesburg for a couple of years. I had never been out of the country before then, so that was a huge culture shock.

The Maldives is a very relaxing destination

The reason for that is it is beautiful and there is nothing there, so it sort of makes you relax, you don’t have a choice. You just read, sleep and recharge your batteries.

I thought the scenery in Montenegro was something else

Absolutely incredible. The food was great and the people were lovely. I talk about it to a lot of people.

I am not a fan of Thailand

I have been a few times and find it so touristy it is all geared towards that. It is beautiful and the food is great, but it isn’t somewhere I want to return to.

I took my daughter to East Africa when she was about nine years old

We saw plenty of wildlife. It is a brilliant thing to do with children.

The hotel than stands out for me is Maia in the Seychelles

One of my most memorable meals was there. The food was incredible. I have never tasted anything like it.

London, Rome and New York are my favourite cities.

You can’t beat London for nightlife.

The best bars and off-the-beaten track restaurants we have been to anywhere were in Ubud, Bali

There were lovely bars where you could sit and watch monkeys climb over the trees. The food is just out of this world, sensational.

The world is so beautiful

I would love to explore it more. Being an actor is all about understanding people, and the more people you meet through travelling, the better.

Plans for travel this year are obviously fluid

… but I hope we will go for our trip in September as usual. I have got so many places that I want to go to. Like the French Polynesian islands.

I don’t like stopovers when I’m flying

There have been times when we’ve arrived at some far-flung place at 3am and then had to do a change of flight. I can’t bear them.

I haven’t been to the poles or hiking up mountains yet

I want to go to Bhutan to do some exploring there, but I haven’t managed it to date.

The post isolated place I’ve been was in the middle of the bush in Senegal

We were in a little village in the middle of nowhere to do some filming work. It was so remote that the people there hadn’t really been outside their own village.

We don’t like eating in hotels very much

We like going to the local restaurants and, to find a good one, it is best to ask the locals where they would recommend.

I like to be prepared

… so I will take lots of medicines and things for “what happens if”. My husband has had to stop me packing an umbrella when we have visited a hot country in the past.

Emirates, Etihad and British Airways are the best airlines from our experience

For work, I’ve sometimes got to sit in the posh seats, which is very nice. My husband flew on Concorde, but I never did and I really wish I had experienced that.
